About St. Thomas School
St. Thomas the Apostle School is located in Newton, Illinois, which is 25 miles southeast of Effingham, Illinois, where Interstates 57 and 70 meet. Newton, with a population of approximately 3,000 residents, is a rural community very proud of its agricultural heritage. As the county seat, Newton is located in the center of Jasper County and is surrounded by numerous other villages and small towns.
Students from throughout Jasper County, and neighboring counties as well, attend St. Thomas. Students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin are admitted and granted access to all rights, privileges, programs and activities regularly offered at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School.
Although St. Thomas gives preference in admission to Catholic students who are members of the St. Thomas parish, then to Catholics students from other parishes, non-Catholic families are welcomed with open hearts to our Christian-focused school.
St. Thomas serves students in grades kindergarten through 8th. Our average class size is 21, and we have a class size limit of 25 students. Although we are happy to have a preschool program housed in our building, the Regional Office of Education is the administrator of that program. Our school feeds into Newton Community High School, the only public high school in Jasper County.
We are proud of the great relationship we have with the public school district, Jasper County Community Unit #1. Subjects taught: Besides the core subjects, St. Thomas is proud to add Religion, Penmanship, Art, Music/Band, Technology and Physical Education/Health to our curriculum. We promote a strong work ethic and hold our students accountable for their behavior and education.
Extracurricular Activities: St. Thomas is supported by an active Booster Club which allows us to offer a wide variety of extracurricular activities to our students. We offer baseball, softball (co-op with Jasper County Jr. High), cross-country (co-op with Jasper County Jr. High), Jr.High boys’ basketball, 5th/6th grade co-ed basketball, Jr. High girls’ basketball (co-op with Jasper County Jr. High), cheerleading, volleyball, scholastic bowl, track and civics club.
